The 48th Ward Neighbors for Justice wants to relay a warm, comradely thank you to the nearly 200 neighbors who attended the candidate forum for the IL-09 congressional race that we held this past Saturday. Whether you’re one of our members, someone who came to cheer on a particular campaign, or an Edgewater resident still making up their mind, we appreciate everyone making time on their Saturday to participate in such an important discussion.

We also want to thank Father Charles, Matt Rodgers, and all the staff from the Church of the Atonement for providing us the space for the discussion, Ben and Joy Bomb Social center for providing audio services, Chicago Hearing Society for assistance with ASL interpretation, and all of the twelve candidates who came out to make their case to voters. If you missed the forum, an audio recording will be posted to our website very soon.

This event was featured in an article in the Evanston RoundTable. You can read the article here.

    Upcoming Endorsements

As a volunteer-run democratic organization, members in good standing are the people who ultimately make the final decision for all endorsements.

    IPO Updates & Actions

    Immigrant Support / ICE Watch

As you are aware, Chicago has been targeted by the federal government for immigration raids and deportations. On September 9th, the Department of Homeland Security dispatched and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement increased the activity of ICE agents as part of their "Operation Midway Blitz".

The 48th Ward Neighbors for Justice recognized this as a threat to the safety and rights of neighbors. ICE agents have clearly demonstrated a willingness to ignore the right to due process, and have previously detained citizens, individuals with legal immigration status, and community members with no criminal records. Therefore, the 48th Ward Neighbors for Justice, along with over a dozen local community organizations, joined One Northside to build a robust community defense network infrastructure.

While this work is an ongoing process, we have some tips and resources we can share now:

North Side Rapid Response Consolidated Resources

    • If you think you have spotted ICE, the first step is always to call ICIRR’s family support hotline. Remember to spread information, not panic, about any enforcement actions you see by gathering information using the SALUTE method before reporting.

    Annual Convention/Steering Committee Elections

Thank you to everyone who came out to the 5th annual convention at Moody's on August 23rd, and thanks as well to everyone who voted in the steering committee election!

All incumbent steering committee members have been re-elected for 2025-2026. The steering committee members are:

    • Mary Difino
    • Michelle O'Connell
    • Joel Thorson
    • Bill Walker
    • Adam Schwartz

    Broadway Upzoning

Like most of the USA, the City of Chicago faces a severe shortage of affordable housing, due to factors including restrictive zoning ordinances, lack of housing inventory, profit based development models.

On August 29th, we sent an email to Alderwoman Angela Clay, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and Alderman Matt Martin with 248 signatures in support of up-zoning along Broadway. The purpose of this petition was to prove to the alderpersons that the community supports increased housing density, affordable housing, and sustainable development.

    Social Tomorrow Night,
    Zoning, our Abortion Fundathon Team,
    And Supporting Immigration Justice

    Neighbors,

First things first: tomorrow at 7:00PM, Whiskey Girl Tavern will be hosting an open mic fundraiser for Edgewater Mutual Aid Network. EMAN has been a terrific partner for the IPO and provides lots of critical relief for our community, which will become more important now that the Trump administration has launched an assault on federal funding. We will be grabbing a table there at 6PM to support their fundraiser, and will be buying some pizza for everyone who is able to join us. Come on out, have some fun, and support some of our organizing cousins!

We also have been contacted by Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth about two legislative initiatives:

    • Broadway Avenue is currently on track to be rezoned. This change would allow for new apartment buildings to be built on both the east and west side of Broadway, and would require that 20% of all new units meet Chicago’s definition of affordability.
    • Legislation has been put forward that would create a city-owned non-profit that would fund the development of housing that is affordable, mixed-income, and environmentally sustainable. You can read about the Green Social Housing initiative here.

Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth has asked our organization to support both initiatives. We encourage everyone with an interest in either of these topics to join the conversation on our Signal  to discuss next steps (Signal can be accessed by desktop or on a cell phone app!).

If you haven’t seen it on social media, we also wanted to share that the IPO is officially participating in the annual Chicago Abortion Fund this year! We have been working with some other groups in the area to raise at least $2,500 to support abortion care in the Chicago area and are happy to share that we are more than 80% of the way to our goal. Here are a few easy ways to support the campaign that you can share with your networks.

    • On Friday, April 25th, 46th Ward Neighbors will be working with our organization to host our own open mic fundraiser at Nabala Cafe. Attendees will have a chance to donate to the fundathon team, and food and beverages will be available for purchase from Nabala. Anyone interested in performing can sign up here. No RSVP is required to attend, but doors open at 6PM and there are limits on how many people can be in the building at the same time.
    • On Saturday, April 26th, local group Daycare Democracy Defenders is hosting Solidarity Sounds at Senn, a meet-up with music for young children. This is a great opportunity to support reproductive care in Chicago while connecting with other parents and caregivers. The event will take place on the Senn High School Lawn unless it rains, in which case it will be pushed to May 3rd.
    • You can also ask your friends to give directly to the campaign at this link!

We want to echo the extreme concern that IPO members have voiced about the federal government’s kidnapping and incarceration of individuals like Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, as well as the purposeful and illegal deportation of immigrants like Kilmar Abrego Garcia to prisons in El Salvador. These are disgusting attempts to break apart families, harm immigrants, and suppress political speech, particularly speech that opposes our government’s extremist support for Israel. We want all members to know that we are watching these situations closely and will immediately consider endorsing any action calling for these steps to be reversed. We also want to thank Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth, Representative Jan Schakowsky, and Senator Dick Durbin for releasing statements calling for Khalil’s release. To our knowledge, Senator Tammy Duckworth has said nothing about prisoners like Khalil but she and Durbin have called for Garcia’s return.

This summer, we will be shifting our tabling and community engagement efforts towards reversing these developments, including by supporting non-profits that extend legal aid to those that are most at risk of deportation. We encourage everyone who wants to help with these efforts, including rapid response should it escalate, to join the conversation on our Signal or sign up to volunteer here.

Finally, we want to wish everyone a happy and safe International Worker’s Day on May 1st. Keep your eyes out for protests and actions on social media, and if you can stop by one of our unionized cafes that weekend to show your support for organized labor. Interested members can also learn about potential union support campaigns like this one for USPS.

    Solidarity, and see you soon,

    Steering Committee

Spectacular news: Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (@the48thward.bsky.socialhas co-sponsored a city council resolution calling for the release of Mahmoud Khalil, an activist, green-card holder, and political prisoner that the Trump administration is trying to deport for his pro-Palestine advocacy!

Thank you to Ald. Manaa-Hoppenworth for standing up for Mahmoud, whose abduction represents an attack on everyone's political rights. If we want the resolution to get a hearing in the Rules Committee, we will need as many city council representatives as possible to support it.

    Lurie Children's Hospital Rally
    Plus, a Contest!

    Neighbors,

We regret to share that Lurie Children’s Hospital has made the decision to stop providing gender-affirming care for some of their patients. The IPO’s Steering Committee has unanimously voted to endorse a rally to demand a reversal of this policy change along with several other Chicago-based organizations.

    Image

We won’t sugar-coat it: this decision to stop providing life-affirming care is unacceptable. Not only does it arguably violate state law, we need our local institutions to be as willing to fight for our trans neighbors as we know all of you are. We urge all of our neighbors and friends to attend the rally this Saturday at 1PM in Seneca Park near Lurie Children’s and show that our city won’t be held hostage by Donald Trump or any of his fellow Republicans.

    Image

Even if you can’t make the rally, we have several events related to our current campaigns that are open to both members and non-members! We have them listed off in chronological order below. All official IPO activity related to our current priorities is coordinated on Signal; if you haven’t joined yet, you can do so at that link once you’ve downloaded the app! Troubleshooting questions can also be directed to admin@48thneighbors.org.

    • Abortion Fundathon Team: The Steering Committee has approved a proposal to participate in the Chicago Abortion Fund’s annual fundathon! Individuals that are interested in helping to meet our IPO’s fundraising goal are invited to attend a meeting tomorrow, February 12th, at 8PM on Zoom. The agenda and Zoom link for the meeting can be accessed here.
    • Deportation Defense Canvassing: Concerned members met last week to talk about the ways we can protect our neighbors from ICE and have resolved to host some know your rights canvasses in the ward! We’ll be equipping volunteers with materials to post around the neighborhood at 1PM on Saturday, February 15th, at Sip & Savor (1070 W Bryn Mawr) and at 3PM on Sunday, February 16th, at Understudy Coffee and Books (5531 N Clark). Come out to either and help keep our neighbors safe!
    • IPO Social: We’ll be going on a field trip for our social this month! Join us for a night out at Whiskey Girl Tavern (6318 N Clark) on Thursday, February 20th, at 6:30PM for laughs, beverages, and a good time with neighbors. Look for the table with the 48th Ward neighbors sign, and come in before 7PM to catch the start of “A Mic of their Own”!
    • Book Club: Our book club is still in full swing! Since these meetings typically take place at the residence of a volunteer, interested individuals can be looped in by joining our Signal and asking for meeting information.

We’ve also had some new members ask about IPO merch. Well good news: our organization is officially the owner of a brand new button-making machine, and we need your help breaking it in! We are looking for creative individuals to send us button designs that represent our IPO and the causes that are important to our neighborhood. We’ll put the designs to our members for a vote, and the designers that get the most votes will receive a gift card to one of our favorite neighborhood spots. Send your ideas to admin@48thneighbors.org by February 26th to participate in the contest!

Looking for inspiration? If you need ideas, you can look at our social media (Facebook | Twitter | Bluesky | Instagram) for previous campaigns, or our democratically decided platform. IPO visual assets like our logo and color codes can be provided on request.

Finally, we are happy to share that IPO member Adam Schwartz has officially joined our Steering Committee! Adam is a long-time Edgewater resident who was one of our first members, and we’re excited to be serving with him.

As per our bylaws, we can seat as many as seven IPO members on the Steering Committee, the central decision-making body for our organization. Membership on Steering is an option for all IPO members who are current on their dues, are in good standing, and are interested in making our organization both powerful and welcoming to all of our neighbors. Anyone interested in filling those vacancies can connect with Steering on Signal or at admin@48thneighbors.org.

    Solidarity, and see you soon!
